Description
FLURIDONE Herbicide
*Recommended for whole pond treatment / NOT partial lake or pond treatment.
Clean your waterways of troublesome, invasive weed species with Alligare’s Fluridone, recreational activities continue while floating, emergent, and submersed weeds disappear.
Alligare Fluridone is a selective, systemic aquatic herbicide used for long-term management of various weeds like duckweed, hydrilla, and pondweed in freshwater ponds and lakes. It is a lower-cost alternative to the name-brand product Sonar, containing the same active ingredient, fluridone.
Product Details & Application
Alligare Fluridone works by being absorbed by the shoots and roots of aquatic plants, inhibiting carotene production, which leads to the breakdown of chlorophyll. This process is slow, with visible effects like bleaching appearing in 7 to 10 days, and full control taking 30 to 90 days of sustained exposure.
- Active Ingredient: Fluridone (41.7% in concentrated liquid versions).
- Target Weeds: Effective against bladderwort, coontail, common duckweed, elodea, hydrilla, naiad, pondweeds, watermilfoils, and water-lily.
- Application: It is ideal for static water bodies with minimal water flow to maintain a consistent concentration for 30-90 days.
- Safety: When applied at rates of 150 ppb or less, there are generally no restrictions on water use for swimming, fishing, or drinking water (including for livestock and pets). Some states like New York may have specific restrictions.
PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS
- Provides selective, systemic control of many of the most troublesome aquatic weeds
- Excellent control with minimal environmental impact
- Can be applied via surface and subsurface applications
- Bleaching injury symptoms occur in 7 to 10 days
- If application rates are 150 ppb or less, treated water can be used immediately for swimming, drinking, and fishing
Alligare Fluridone is a selective, systemic aquatic herbicide used for long-term control of problematic aquatic weeds like duckweed, hydrilla, and milfoil in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and canals. It works by inhibiting the plant’s ability to produce chlorophyll, causing it to turn white and die slowly over 30 to 90 days, which minimizes the risk of oxygen depletion in the water body.
How Alligare Fluridone Works
- Systemic Action: The active ingredient, fluridone, is absorbed by the shoots and roots of the target plants and translocated throughout their vascular system, ensuring the entire plant is controlled, including the roots.
- Gradual Effects: Lethal effects are expressed slowly as existing chlorophyll degrades and chlorosis (whitening) sets in, a process that typically takes several weeks to several months. This slow die-off prevents rapid oxygen depletion which can harm fish.
- Long-Term Control: When applied correctly to static water bodies with minimal outflow, Alligare Fluridone can provide control for a year or longer, with effects sometimes lasting up to two years.
- Safety: According to the product label, when applied at rates of 150 ppb (parts per billion) or less, the treated water may be used immediately for drinking (potable) water (including livestock and pets), swimming, and fishing with no waiting period.
Common Plants Controlled:
- Bladderwort
- Para grass
- Southern naiad
- Duckweed
- Naiad
- Curly-leaf pondweed
- Common coontail
- Hydrilla
- Cabomba
- Waterlily

How much to use:
Examples of Alligare Fluridone Liquid (oz):
- Pond 1.0 Acre = 32 (oz)
- Pond .75 Acre = 24 (oz)
- Pond .50 Acre = 16 (oz)
- Pond .25 Acre = 8 (oz)
(We typically recommend this for WHOLE POND TREATMENT, not partial. Due to it’s “slow release” many customers use it as a preventative chemical early and switch to contact herbicides later in the season such as Flumigard, Diquat, Agros.)
- Always refer to the label for exact chemical rates, restrictions, directions, & instructions.
Cost:
- Alligare Fluridone Liquid $1,249 (64oz)
- Alligare Fluridone Liquid $1,889 (128oz)
- Cannot ship to AK, CA, CT, DC, HI, MA, ME, NJ, NY, RI, VT, and WA.
